Rachel Francis is a Toronto artist working primarily in acrylic. Francis loves the human form and the rough and tumble of its existence. As a result her work is strongly figurative. Francis shares John Berger’s view that appearances are a frontier and that painters search for “messages which cross that frontier” - that they are engaged in “a ferocious dialogue with the visible… a burrowing in the dark… under the apparent”. The great images, he says, “occur when the two tunnels meet and join perfectly.” As an artist that that is her, improbable, goal.
