Rachel Francis is a Toronto artist working primarily in acrylic. Francis loves the human form and the rough and tumble of its existence. As a result her work is strongly figurative. Francis shares John Berger’s view that appearances are a frontier and that painters search for “messages which cross that frontier” - that they are engaged in “a ferocious dialogue with the visible… a burrowing in the dark… under the apparent”. The great images, he says, “occur when the two tunnels meet and join perfectly.” As an artist that that is her, improbable, goal. Francis's work has been widely exhibited in Canada and is contained in many private collections.
